Instruction to patients wearing removable braces

Success in treatment depends very much on your co-operation.

Please read and follow these instructions very carefully:

1. You are wearing a removable Appliance (brace) which is intended to be worn at all times, so you should eat and sleep with the appliance in your mouth, unless instructed otherwise. However, the appliance should be left out during games or swimming and kept in a safe place and be re-inserted immediately afterwards.
2. During the first few days, the appliance may be uncomfortable and eating and speech may be difficult. Any tenderness should soon pass and you should quickly get used to your appliance. If you leave it out your teeth will start to drift and soon the brace will not fit. The National Health Service may then require you to pay for a replacement.
3. If the discomfort persists, do not wait for your next appointment, but contact the practice at once and an earlier appointment will be made as soon as possible.
4. If you have been instructed to activate a screw on the appliance, please do so with an adult and record on a calendar each occasion that the screw has been turned so that you can keep track of your progress.
5. Avoid all sticky foods, especially toffee, Mars bar, chewing gum and hot foods as these may damage the appliance. Breakages to braces inevitably slow down treatment. It involves you in more visits.
6. It is essential that your teeth and your appliance be kept perfectly clean. After every meal and before going to bed, brush the appliance using toothpaste and cold water and also clean your teeth. Then replace the appliance correctly.
7. If you are unable to keep an appointment, please contact the practice as early as possible beforehand. If you unavoidably miss an appointment call us.
8. Fluoride mouth rinse should be used daily throughout orthodontic treatment and disclosing tablets should be used regularly.
9. It is important to continue to visit your own Dental practitioner so that he may carryout check-ups and any other dental procedures, which he may find necessary.
10. Bring your toothbrush everytime you come and see us and always clean your teeth thoroughly just before each appointment.

APPLIANCES MUST NOT BE WORN FOR LONG PERIODS WITHOUT SUPERVISION
